The AstroFreaks Project

Hello Fellow Freaks!

Yesterday, BlueMoonFiction publicly launched its first NFT art collection by minting AstroFreak #1 on the Ethereum network. This was the accumulation of a 2-week stretch of long sleepless nights where our two-man team worked tirelessly to conceptualize, design and program what would become the AstroFreaks project.

The drive behind launching such a project stems from watching all the beautiful and exciting artworks popping up in the NFT world. We believed that our team could launch an art collection that can produce both unique and fun collectibles that the community would enjoy collecting and showing off!

We should, however, give credit where it is due. The original NFT project by Larva Labs, CryptoPunks, was a massive inspiration to us. We, to this day, are amazed at the simple and yet brilliant design behind the CryptoPunks collection. AstroFreaks is a homage to them in many ways and would not exist without its creators’ foundational work. With that said, AstroFreaks is still its own unique and one-of-a-kind project, and we hope the community will recognize our efforts in producing an art collection with a fresh vision.

The following post will go into depth about AstroFreaks, how the collection was created, and what one should expect to see throughout the release of its 1,000 unique Freaks.

AstroFreaks Overview

The AstroFreaks project is a pixel generative CryptoArt collection inspired by CryptoPunks. The collection consists of 1,000 characters that each contain a unique combination of traits that make them a fun and appealing collectible. Most of the traits were designed with a pop culture theme that references many movies and TV shows. The community should expect to see a hilarious crossover of traits that you probably never thought you would see!

The AstroFreak collection consists of 4 character types and 6 trait categories. A character can carry only one trait from a category at a time, but it can hold anywhere between 0 to 5 trait categories. Finally, on the top right corner of the collectible, one can notice an element. There are 4 possible elements, which (without revealing too much) hold the key to a future project!

Each character type, trait category, trait and number of traits hold a rarity level. The list of traits, characters and their rarity ranking is currently a secret (sorry!). However, as we cross a certain threshold of mints, we plan to release interesting charts and tables that track all the to-date distribution statistics.

Freak Creation

Imagine seeing a character wearing Morpheus’ pince-nez glasses while holding Thor’s hammer and wearing Lebowski’s Cowichan Cardigan attire (and here we are trying to keep secrets!). This is one hilarious combination you might expect to see in our collection. We could have created the combinations ourselves, but we left this creation process to be decided by probability gods. This is the generative aspect of this art collection.

We separately designed each piece of the art ourselves, and this includes the characters and their traits. However, the 1,000 combinations of the character type and its traits were left to a computer program. This introduces a randomness level to the creation process, which can create crazy trait combinations that we wouldn’t have thought of!

The program, at its most simple form, follows the following decision process:

• Step 1: Choose an element (top right corner)
• Step 2: Choose a character type
• Step 3: Choose the number of traits
• Step 4: Choose the trait categories
• Step 5: Choose the traits within each category

During each stage, the decision process followed a probability distribution that we implemented to create rarity levels across. Lastly, the program was designed to refrain from creating the same Freak twice.

Freaks Distribution

The distribution of the 1,000 Freaks is as follows:

• 20 to project creators
• 100 giveaways to the community
• 880 public sales

The current vision is to have the public sales split into 2 phases:

• The first 50 will be listed for sale at a fixed price of 0.1 ETH
• The remaining 830 will be listed for auction sale with a starting bid of 0.1 ETH

Depending on demand and community feedback, the public sales might be adjusted accordingly.
